Health and Physical Education



Physical Education (Male and Female)
Physical Education is a required course for students in Grades 9 to 11.  The course gives students an opportunity to experience physical and mental development in a controlled physical education environment.  Physical education's purpose is to provide a variety of physical activities designed to develop a desire for life long fitness, an appreciation of sports, as both a participant and spectator, and provide for the development of socialization skills through competition and teamwork. Elective courses are offered in Grade 12. .5 credit - 3 periods/cycle.

Health 10 (Prerequisite: None)
This course provides an opportunity to study and evaluate contemporary health problems found in our society.  This course will enhance the competencies of individuals to make decisions regarding their personal and family health, and the health of the populations of which  they are a part.  It is automatically scheduled in Grade 10. .5 credit - 3 periods/cycle.

Health 11 (Prerequisite: None)
This course helps students to examine their lifestyle, select goals, and make plans to achieve and maintain optimum health and become a responsible, autonomous adult.  This involves choosing behaviors that help prevent illness and accidents, promote health for oneself and others, or improve the quality of the environment.  The course will promote responsible decision making and provide students with life management skills that will last a lifetime.  It is automatically scheduled in Grade 11. .5 credit - 3 periods/cycle.

Senior Elective Physical Education (PE 9th, 10th, 11th)
The main focus of this class is to provide students with information concerning different lifetime fitness activities in addition to those already offered in physical education to encourage participation throughout their lives. The students will still have the opoportunity to participate in team sports such as basketball, volleyball, soccer, etc., as well as, individual sports such as tennis, badminton, and ping-pong, that have traditionally been offered in the physical education curriculum. In addition, the student will be given information and opportunities for participation in new activities through the use of guest speakers and field trips to various community facilities. Some of these activites include, but are not limited to, golf, bowling, hiking, backpacking, mountain biking, canoeing, and kickboxing. Students will be asked to pay a fee for the various field trips that will be a part of the course. 1 credit - 6 periods/cycle.

Senior Weight Training and Fitness Training
Students will have an opportunity to participate in a variety of strength training programs including:  body resistance, military-style training, fitness and strength training machines, isometric, sandbag, free weight barbells, dumbbells, and a variety of other strength training methods will be introduced.  Theory, proper lifting procedures, safety. proper spotting techniques, and the  development of individualized programs for the student's use will be a part of the course.  A variety of cardiovascular fitness and game activities will be included in the daily course offerings.  Students enrolled in this class will also participate in off campus field trips at a local golf course, bowling alley, and mini golf facility.  A participation fee may be required for some of these off campus activities. 1 credit - 6 periods/cycle.
